Data Security

As the UK government closes its new data security consultation, the data centre industry, already well versed in these matters, has contributed its ideas, explained what it already does to secure data, and made clear what it expects from the government.

There are many aspects of data security which are complicated much by the fast pace of technological advancement and the challenges that brings. There are also many industry interests intertwined in issues of security, from the end-user, right up to the foundational aspects such as the engineering and building of facilities. In short, data centres are at the heart of such planning and decision-making. The Office for National Statistics shows that for a six-year period, between 2013 and 2019, the number of businesses buying cloud storage services more than doubled. Now, more than half of businesses rely on cloud platforms. This development has massive implications for the entire industry.

On the part of the government, Data Minister Julia Lopez MP wants to ensure the UK has resilience and an infrastructure fit for purpose, one that has as much protection as possible from outages and from any threats to national security. The UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport is seeking to address and pre-empt security problems, as more and more of the UK economy is reliant on online services, particularly in the areas of finance and banking, all other commercial activity, but also in areas such as education, healthcare and defence, where disruption would touch upon every aspect of life.

Tightening up security would mean planning better for any major incidents, but crucially ensuring there is national coordination, that remedial processes are fast and responsive, leaving nothing to chance. It is a timely and welcome move in the industry to have a broader, national response to anything unforeseen.  The UK’s data storage and processing infrastructure is growing, and the government sees its opportunity now to ensure all bases are covered.

There are many reasons to do this now, including safeguarding against what climate change will bring, and carefully considering any wide-ranging effects of economic or political instability elsewhere, with the cyber-threats that go along with that. Also, as there is an ever-growing workforce attached to the physical building and operation of data centres, and a large amount of capital tied up in such projects, there absolutely needs to be an extra layer of legislative protection.
